    Celebrating 50 years of solid service, Corps and community leaders will gather July 19 to commemorate the 1963 opening of Black Butte Dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District project near Orland.

  • Corps maintains higher water storage capacity at Success Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District announced June 10 it will maintain the operating restriction at Success Dam implemented in 2012. The restriction allows water storage up to 65,000 acre-feet or approximately 75 percent of the maximum capacity of the reservoir behind Success Dam. Ultimately, this could mean more water for local users during high-water months.

  • Stimulus-funded Marysville Ring Levee phase one completed

    Phase one of the Stimulus-funded Marysville Ring Levee Project has been completed. The project is a partnership between the Sacramento District, the Central Valley Flood Protection Board and Marysville Levee District.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is inviting the public to an outreach meeting to discuss upcoming American River levee work at a city sump station near the River Park neighborhood.

  • Corps offers tips on avoiding and treating swimmer’s itch

    Warning signs are being posted at New Hogan Lake with a seasonal recurrence of swimmer’s itch reported by two visitors to the lake today. Visitors are cautioned to avoid swimming where warning signs are posted, and to heed guidance from the Centers for Disease Control to towel dry and shower immediately after swimming, and avoid feeding birds at the lake.

  • Furlough notification letters issued to nearly 300 Corps employees

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District began issuing furlough notification letters May 31 to 301 of its nearly 1,100 civilian employees located in Central and Northern California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

    Inspections by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District rated maintenance of more than 32 miles of levees along the Sacramento River’s east bank and levees along both sides of Cherokee Canal as unacceptable.

    More than 2,200 people died in Johnstown, Pa., May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam failed nine miles upstream of the town. “On National Dam Safety Awareness Day, May 31, we are called to remember both the benefits of dams and the risks associated with potential dam incidents and failures,” said Col. Bill Leady, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District.
