    Solar panel arrays form a canopy at a construction site in Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif., March 12, 2013. The construction site is for phase 1 and 2 of a solar microgrid project at the installation, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District. Phase 1 was completed in April 2012 and generates one megawatt of power, enough energy to power 250 to 300 homes. Phase 2, scheduled for completion in May 2013, will generate an additional one megawatt of power and is expected to be the second of four at the post. The Sacramento District awarded contracts of $8.4 million for phase I and $9.7 million for phase 2. Along with the energy production, the cover provided by the panel arrays will shade the majority of the post’s vehicles. Fort Hunter Liggett is one of six pilot installations selected by the U.S. Army to be net zero energy, meaning the installation will create as much energy as it uses.

    Corps of Engineers helps build 'green' military base for the future

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is helping build a military base for the future at Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif., one of several U.S. Army pilot installations selected to be net zero energy and net zero waste by 2020. Net zero means the installation will create as much energy as it uses, and reuse and recover all of its waste products. The district is nearing completion on the second of four solar microgrid projects at the installation.

    Representatives from the Sacramento District attended a groundbreaking ceremony March 6, 2013, at the U.S. Army Garrison Camp Parks Reserve Training center in Dublin, Calif., to kick off the first construction phase of the largest Army Reserve Property Exchange Agreement in Department of Defense history.

    Willow poles planted along the Sacramento River levee near Paintersville, Calif., Feb. 11, 2013 will provide shaded riparian habitat for threatened fish species. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District project aims to preserve riparian habitat following emergency levee erosion repairs between 2007 and 2009. The Sacramento District worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service to design the project for habitat benefit, and is the first Corps district to receive a variance under the Corps’ levee vegetation policy to plant willows near the levee after engineering analysis showed they won’t threaten the levee.

    Thanks to 3-D printing technology, Sacramento District projects are being shrunk into handheld models in a matter of hours to help team members visualize and explain their work like never before.
  • Construction crews work in darkness--when energy demand is lowest--on a stretch of American River levee near the California State University-Sacramento campus Sept. 12, 2012 to close a 900-foot-long gap in a seepage cutoff wall underneath high power lines. The Corps has built more than 20 miles of seepage walls into American River levees since 2000. Areas where construction was complicated by utilities, bridges or power lines were set aside for later construction. The project is part of the American River Common Features project, a joint flood risk reduction effort between the Corps, the state’s Central Valley Flood Protection Board/Department of Water Resources and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency.

    Sacramento levee project earns 2012 Flood Control Project of the Year award

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District and its contractor, Magnus Pacific Corporation, will be recognized with the American Society of Civil Engineers Sacramento Section 2012 Flood Control Project of the Year award for their work on an American River levee project north of the California State University-Sacramento campus during a ceremony Feb. 20 in Sacramento, Calif.

    Hill Air Force Base child development center receives LEED-Silver designation

    The new child development center became the first LEED-certified project at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, receiving the official designation of LEED-Silver during a ceremony Jan. 10. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District oversaw construction of the facility.

    Leadership Sacramento turns Corps planner into community leader

    Kim Carsell, a planner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, is now a graduate of the Sacramento Metro Chamber’s Leadership Sacramento program and helped complete its largest-ever community service project: building an amphitheater for Sacramento educational non-profit Soil Born Farms.
