    Students return to school after Northern California wildfires

    Returning to school after winter break took on a new meaning at an elementary school located in one of the heavily fire-damaged communities in Santa Rosa, California. Students at Schaefer Elementary School, located in the Coffey Park community, returned to their school building Jan. 9 after a three-month absence as a result of the October 2017 wildfires that blazed through their community.

    Folsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway recognized as Outstanding Water Project

    The American Society of Civil Engineers California Region recognized the Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway project as the state’s Outstanding Water Project for 2016 at an awards ceremony held in Los Angeles last month. The honor specifically highlights construction of the auxiliary spillway’s control structure. The structure, basically a second dam, will complement the functions of Folsom’s existing dam by allowing water to be released earlier and more safely from the reservoir during a high water event.

    Formula for winter reservoir management more complicated than it appears

    With the rainy season upon us, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is buckling down to ensure the Central Valley’s reservoirs are ready for whatever the season may or may not bring. While water management is a year-round responsibility, the winter months bring with them especially tough challenges for the Corps in maintaining the delicate balance of flood risk reduction and water supply.

    California Army National Guard members of the 132nd Multi-Role Bridge Company (MRBC), based out of Redding, California, conducted drill training at the Corps recreation area site Sept. 17 and exercised their unique skillset—bridging gaps.

    Nancy Haley, left, chief of the Northern California regulatory branch for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, and Kelly Briggs, California Department of Water Resources environmental program manager, worked on numerous projects in common for their respective agencies over the past few years. From that shared experience, the pair developed a series of workshops where personnel from the Corps and state water agencies communicated details about their interwoven processes in order to help all Californians.

    Mark Gilfillan, tribal liaison with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, has been asked to help teach members of other federal agencies how to best protect Native American sacred sites.

The Yuba City team spent two weeks in Tanzania in August 2014, improving orphanage facilities and meeting the kids.

    Gifts and givers -- a Corps engineer in Africa

    He traveled to Tanzania, Africa, on a mission to help improve a home for orphans but returned feeling those children gave him a much greater gift – a lesson in strength, humility and kindness. The recent two-week trip to Tanzania was the second such service trip to Africa for Brian Poole, a supervisory engineer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District engineering division.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District hosted a tabletop emergency exercise for Martis Creek Dam July 30 to bring together representatives from more than a dozen federal, state and local agencies to discuss what their response would and should be during an emergency.
