    Presidio upgrades critical to defense language training mission

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District manages construction on several major projects at the Presidio of Monterey in Monterey, Calif. The program incorporates the latest energy and water conservation technologies in order to operate more efficiently and in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner. Most recently, the Corps broke ground on a new dining facility March 17, 2014, that is designed to feed up to 1300 personnel over a 90 minute period. The Corps is also constructing a new general instruction building for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and is renovating the school’s cultural center. Both projects will be completed August 2014.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District levee work is underway Aug. 21, 2013 along the north bank of the American River, just east of its confluence with the Natomas East Main Drainage Canal in north Sacramento, Calif.     Going Green: Ancient technology helps Corps build green at Presidio

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Egyptians did it. So did the Romans. Now, at the Presidio of Monterey in California, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is using the same ancient practice to meet modern-day, green-building requirements.

Pier 2 has been inoperable for the past five years and is a key component for MOTCO, which represents nearly 25 percent of the nation’s total ammunition shipping capability. The Department of the Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District have been developing three viable scenarios for Pier 2 and/or Pier 3 modernizations - all of which would allow MOTCO to meet its mission safely and efficiently. The district is gathering public input to determine the best approach to modernize the piers, and hopes to outline that plan in the final environmental impact statement expected fall 2014 with possible construction tentatively scheduled in 2016.     Since 1942, the Military Ocean Terminal Concord – or MOTCO – has been a vital ammunition distribution center in support of the deploying forces during the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars.
