SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded an $18.5 million contract Sept. 30 to Halbert Construction Company Inc. of El Cajon for construction of a new dining facility and supporting facilities at the Presidio of Monterey.

Halbert Construction Company Inc. is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business, as recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“The Presidio will get a new, state-of-the art, 26,000 square-foot dining facility designed to process 1,300 people in 90 minutes,” said Les Turnbeaugh, project manager for the Sacramento District. “And in support of the Army's sustainability mission, the project design has been developed to a LEED Silver green building certification."

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and measures green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Other work includes installing new utilities, grading, paving, parking areas and a retaining wall for installation support facilities.

Work is scheduled to start in late 2013 or early 2014, with completion expected in 2015.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District provides planning, engineering, project management, environmental restoration and construction services to military and civilian customers in parts of eight western states, including California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming.
