SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers appropriations for fiscal year 2015 will provide more than $141 million for Sacramento District flood risk reduction, ecosystem restoration, and operations and maintenance work in the Central Valley.

The appropriations fund projects through September 2015, the end of the federal fiscal year. Funded projects include:

Sacramento area:
• Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway construction: $92.6 million
• Natomas levee improvements design: $1.5 million
• Folsom Dam raise design: $1.2 million
• Sacramento River bank protection study and construction: $1.2 million

Central Valley:
• Isabella Dam improvements design: $8 million
• Marysville ring levee construction: $5 million
• Hamilton City ecosystem restoration: $3.8 million
• Lower Cache Creek feasibility study: $800,000
• Yuba River restoration feasibility study: $300,000

In addition to work plan funding for Natomas, President Barack Obama’s proposed fiscal year 2016 budget, released Feb. 2, includes $3.5 million to complete design on levee improvements in preparation for construction as soon as 2017. While the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency completed upgrades to nearly one-third of the 42 miles of levee surrounding the basin, the Corps will complete the remaining 24 miles.

The budget proposal also provides $18.6 million to begin construction to raise earthen dikes and dams around Folsom Lake, as well as funding for ongoing studies on the Sacramento River, Yuba River and Lower Cache Creek.

“This work plan and budget highlight the significant progress we’re making on flood risk reduction and environmental restoration efforts in the region," said Col. Mike Farrell, Sacramento District commander. "We're fortunate to have many partners working toward the same goals, and the funding represented in the work plan gives us the resources to continue making progress in reducing risk to lives and property.”
