ORLAND, California – The Eagle Pass boat ramp at Black Butte Lake will re-open this week, beginning Friday, June 6.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District closed access to facilities at three Black Butte Lake recreation areas—Buckhorn, Orland Buttes, and Eagle Pass—on May 19, 2025, due to staffing shortages at the project.

USACE Sacramento District leaders are adjusting staffing to shift park rangers from other water resource projects to support Black Butte Lake operations. The decision means Black Butte Lake will now have adequate personnel to safely support use of the Eagle Pass boat ramp.

Buckhorn and Orland Buttes recreation areas, and their respective campgrounds, remain closed; however, USACE is committed to reopening these areas and resuming full operations at Black Butte Lake as soon as conditions allow.

Burris Creek and Grizzly Flat recreation areas as well as Observation Point are all open for day use as well.

Black Butte Dam and Lake is one of ten U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District recreation sites. Learn more about the recreation USACE offers at www.spk.usace.army.mil/missions/recreation
