Sacramento Weir Widening Project

An aerial image looking south towards Sacramento and West Sacramento showcases the ongoing construction of the Sacramento Weir Widening Project along the west bank of the Sacramento River in Yolo County, California, April 10, 2024. The image highlights a rig mixing soil and driving piles for the foundation work for the fish passage structure. The project is an approximately $350 million collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California’s Central Valley Flood Protection Board, California Department of Water Resources, and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency to widen the existing 1,950-foot weir an additional 1,500 feet. The expanded weir and bypass will allow excessive floodwaters to flow over the river channels and into the bypasses during severe flood events, ultimately reducing flood risk for the more than 500,000 people in the greater Sacramento region. The work is part of the larger American River Common Features 2016 project that will modernize Sacramento’s aging flood infrastructure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District will host an event at the Sacramento Weir to showcase more than $4B in Greater Sacramento flood risk management projects April 23 at 11 a.m.

In addition to a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Sacramento Weir expansion, construction projects at Natomas Basin, Folsom Dam, West Sacramento and along the American and Sacramento Rivers will also be highlighted, as well as the new comprehensive study of the Yolo Bypass that will evaluate multi-purpose project opportunities.

These projects will significantly reduce the risk of flood-related impacts in and around Sacramento, helping protect millions of people, businesses, infrastructure, and property.

Representative Doris Matsui (CA-7) will join Army and USACE leaders, as well as state and local stakeholders for the event which will be held at the Sacramento Weir construction site northwest of the city. Ceremony participants will be available for interviews immediately following its conclusion.
