    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District has granted authorization requested by Union Pacific Railroad to temporarily stabilize a culvert in the railroad causeway across Utah’s Great Salt Lake, while requiring ecological monitoring and mitigation.

    Low water levels close Black Butte Lake’s Buckhorn boat ramp

    Due to low water conditions, Buckhorn boat ramp at Black Butte Lake, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park near Orland, has been closed. Boats may still be launched from the ramp in Eagle Pass Recreation Area and Buckhorn Campground remains open on a first-come basis throughout the winter.

    Sacramento is among the most at-risk cities in America for catastrophic flooding. An aging system of dams, weirs, bypasses and levees work together to reduce flood risk for the city. But that system, just like a chain, is only as strong as its weakest link, and needs comprehensive modernization.

    Visitors stand atop newly dredged river sand at the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge in Antioch, Calif., Nov. 9, 2013, the result of a unique partnership among the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District and the Port of Stockton. The sand – dredged from the Stockton Deep Water Ship Channel to ensure navigability – will help restore the Antioch Dunes ecosystem, creating habitat on the refuge for such endangered species as the Lange’s metalmark butterfly, the Antioch Dunes Evening Primrose and the Contra Costa Wallflower.
