The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District supervises the use of an innovative Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) system towing a magnetometer to search for munitions 14 miles east of Marysville on Jan 24, 2019. The testing took place in the Spenceville Wildlife Area, a FUDS (Formerly Used Defense Site) known as the former Camp Beale. The UAS, sub-contracted by Bristol, is being used by the Corps in a Pilot Study to search for any subsurface munitions that may remain in the area. The cutting edge use of UAS, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and magnetometer is being tested to accurately search for munitions in steep terrain or sensitive habitats.
