Corps of Engineers to outline schedule for blasting

Published Feb. 14, 2011

FOLSOM, Calif. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District will host a public meeting Feb. 23 at Folsom Veterans Hall to discuss its schedule for excavation blasting at Folsom Dam as part of the Joint Federal Project.

Regularly scheduled periodic closures of the Folsom Lake Crossing roadway will be required due to its close proximity to the construction area for the new auxiliary spillway where the blasting will occur. Similar closures occurred in 2009 as part of the first phase of the project, completed by the Bureau of Reclamation.

Meeting Details:

5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Joint Federal Project is a $962 million cooperative effort between the Corps and Reclamation to improve the safety of Folsom Dam and reduce flood risk for the Sacramento area. The new auxiliary spillway will include a 1,100-foot-long approach channel leading to the spillway from Folsom Reservoir, a concrete control structure with six submerged gates, a 3,000-foot-long concrete-lined spillway chute and a stilling basin that will slow water released into the American River to safer velocities.
