SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began modifications to Dike 6 this week in association with the Folsom Dam Raise Project resulting in a temporary closure of the dike until Spring 2025.
Construction on Dike 6 began Dec. 3. The dike will be raised by 3.5 feet through a combination of an earthen raise and installation of a concrete floodwall.
The eight dikes surrounding Folsom Lake are to be raised 3.5 feet as part of the Folsom Dam Raise Project. Dike 8 was completed in 2020. Dike 1 is expected to be completed during Winter 2025. The left and right wing dams and the main dam will also call for similar modifications.
The purpose of the Folsom Dam Raise is to reduce flood risk in the Greater Sacramento area by enhancing the utilization of Folsom Lake’s surcharge flood storage space and increasing the temporary water storage space used during major flood events.
The project is expected to be complete in 2028.
