SACRAMENTO, California – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will celebrate National Public Lands Day by waiving fees for its day-use recreation areas and hosting volunteers for a number of park improvement projects on Saturday, Sept. 28.

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. For more than two decades, outdoor enthusiasts have come together to improve local recreation areas by helping with landscaping, small construction projects, litter removal and trail maintenance.

Volunteers will receive a coupon for a free day-use admission pass that’s good for a year at any park managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

USACE has been involved with National Public Lands Day since its inception in 1994 and has consistently been one of the event’s largest providers of sites and volunteers.

“National Public Lands Day is such a fun and cool event. Families, friends, park regulars, community groups, they all come out to help make our recreation areas look great for everyone,” said Alicia Kohl, Sacramento District Senior Park Ranger.

Last year, more than 7,500 volunteers served 34,000 hours on USACE-managed lands, removing 51,000 pounds of trash, cleaning 1,100 miles of roadways and shoreline, improving 320 acres of habitat, and engaging 218 partner organizations.
