Three combat engineers who volunteered to undertake a dangerous mission to blow up a road obstacle that was preventing advancement of allied troops near the Aure River, France – from left, William Farrar, Leo Bradford and Michael Szelwach – each received the Silver Star, awarded for singular acts of valor or heroism.
