Lieutenant Colonel John F. Lory assumed deputy command of the Sacramento District Engineer in May 2017. The Sacramento District is an organization of 900 engineers, scientists and support staff working in all or parts of eight western states. The District is responsible for military design and construction, civil works, international and interagency support, real estate services to the Army and Air Force, regulatory work, environmental services, and emergency management.  Being one of the largest in the Corps, the District is responsible for more than 2 million acres and 300,000 miles of waterways, with an annual budget of over $500 million.

A native of Ventura, California, Lieutenant Colonel Lory was commissioned in the Engineer Regiment upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1998 with a degree in Economics. 

His past assignments: Vertical Construction Platoon Leader, 46th Engineer Battalion, Fort Polk, Louisiana; Battalion Engineer, 1-509th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), Fort Polk, Louisiana; Executive Officer, 50th Multi-role Bridge Company, Republic of Korea; Brigade Engineer, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, Republic of Korea; Plans Officer, 555th Combat Engineer Group; Commander, A Company, 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), Fort Lewis, Washington; Project Manager, Omaha District, USACE, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Group Engineer, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Colorado Springs, Colorado; Senior Engineer Advisor, U.S. Military Training Mission, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Chief of Engineer Plans & Exercise Planner, 8th Army, Republic of Korea; Chief of Protection and Senior Engineer observer/trainer, Mission Command Training Program, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

He is a graduate of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, receiving a Master of Business Administration Degree, with a concentration in Project Management. Lieutenant Colonel Lory’s military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and the Command and General Staff College.  Lieutenant Colonel Lory is a certified Project Management Professional.
