American River Bike Trail detour begins Aug. 20

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – To make way for a $5.7 million Sacramento levee slurry wall project, an American River Bike Trail detour is scheduled to begin the afternoon of Aug. 20. The project and detour is expected to be complete by Nov. 30.

Throughout construction, all recreational traffic will be detoured to a trail closer to the river. The detour trail surface will be patched and vegetation will be trimmed away from the trail; however, users are asked to be alert, patient and proceed with caution, as the detour trail is narrow.

The project will close a gap in an existing levee seepage cutoff wall between the Campus Commons Golf Course and the Northrop Avenue trail access. Seepage walls strengthen levees and help prevent water from leaking through or under them.

The Corps has built more than 20 miles of seepage walls into American River levees since 2000. Areas where construction was complicated by utilities, bridges or power lines were set aside for later construction.

This work is part of the American River Common Features Program, a joint effort between the Corps, the California Central Valley Flood Protection Board and Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency, to reduce flood risk throughout the region.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District provides planning, engineering, project management, environmental restoration and construction services to military and civilian customers in parts of eight western states, including California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming.
