Corps awards final contract for American River levee-gap fixes

Published March 12, 2015

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded the last construction contract to close gaps in cutoff walls along the lower American River in Sacramento on March 12. Work is expected to begin in April and end in September.

The Corps built more than 20 miles of seepage cutoff walls into American River levees between 2000 and 2002, but work at around 30 sites was set aside due to complicated encroachments such as utilities, power lines and bridges. The newly-awarded project and ongoing work at the H Street and Howe Avenue bridges represent the last of the lower American River levee-gap fixes.

"We've still got some potentially tricky levee work ahead of us through the summer," said John Hoge, project manager for the Corps. "But still, I think there's a sense of accomplishment with this contract being the last construction for the (levee-gap fix) program."

The work will remove two inactive sanitary sewer lines and install 1,350 linear feet of seepage cutoff wall in order to close a gap in the existing wall on the east levee of the Natomas East Main Drainage Canal in north Sacramento. The feature will help prevent water from seeping through and underneath the levee as it flows from Folsom Dam to the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers.

The $4,152,412 contract was awarded to Contractor Services Group, Inc. of West Sacramento, a U.S. Small Business Administration 8(a)-designated small business. The Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Business Development Program is designed to help small, disadvantaged businesses compete for federal contracts.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District provides planning, engineering, project management, environmental restoration and construction services to military and civilian customers in parts of eight western states, including California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming.
