Schafer Dam Renaming
Two rangers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, unveil a sign bearing the new name of the former Success Dam during a renaming ceremony near Porterville, California, Oct. 1, 2019. The dam’s name was changed to the Richard L. Schafer Dam following a congressional resolution authored by Rep. Kevin McCarthy and signed into law by President Donald Trump Aug. 9, 2019. The dam was constructed in 1961 and has prevented an estimated total of $200 million in property damage and reduced flood risk for a population of more than 76,000 people.
