Karl Mai stands on the same beach from which he left Vietnam in 1981 as one of the fleeing “Boat People.” Behind him is a bamboo fishing boat like the one he and 18 others crowded into for the nighttime escape to Hong Kong. This photo was taken in August 2012 when Mai and his family revisited Vietnam.
